Maha Shiva Ratri is one of the most popular hindu celebration of Nepal. God Shiva regarded as lord of the lord is supreme Hindu god of destruction. For Hindus world is the manifestation of the form of Lord Shiva. Shiva is absolute power who have no beginning, middle or ending but it is believed that he was for the first manifested in Linga form (“Lingodbhav Moorti” ) on the 14th night of the new moon during dark half of Phalguna which is celebrated as a Maha Shivaratri.

The absolute form Shiva is called as SadaShiva. There are hundreds of names for Shiva to address his qualities. There are various logics behind the celebration of Mahashivaratri. God is Shiva is respected for consuming poison that came out of churning the Sea to protect the Universe.

There are many mythical stories about the origin of Shivaratri festival.
Mostly it rains on the day of Shiva ratri in Nepal. It can be a mere coincidence or Power of Shiva. After this the trees starts getting leaves, spring flowers start blooming and earth becomes very different. God shiva is regarded as God of destruction but he is pro-creative power, a cause of dance of Purusha and Prakriti.

Some people see it as weed (marijuana also called ganja) smoking festival. Legally it is illegal to smoke weed in Nepal but culturally the sadhus are getting discount for its use. Many people share chilim (the smoke pipe) from sadhus and feel blessed. People say that it is the elixir they are consuming to make Shiva happy. Shiva is said to sleep often in cremation pyres, ride on bulls etc which people hesitate to do but they dare to smoke chillums and get ecstasy.
