Staying with Bijaya and his family was one of the most meaningful experiences of our journey in Nepal. From the very first day, we were welcomed not as guests, but as part of the family. Bijaya is a kind, generous, and deeply inspiring man who truly opens his heart and home to everyone he meets. We had the chance to be involved in daily life — from sharing homemade meals to participating in the children’s morning routines and school activities. It was a true cultural immersion, filled with laughter, learning, and touching moments. If you’re looking for something real, far from typical tourism, this is it. You’ll leave not just with memories, but with a second family in Nepal. Thank you, Bijaya, for your trust, your warmth, and the beautiful values you share every day.

The program coordinator was very supportive, offering a warm welcome, cultural lessons, and assistance with anything I needed throughout my stay. I especially appreciated being included in national and religious ceremonies during my period there. I would definitely recommend this program!

This was a truly meaningful volunteering experience and a joyful journey of cultural exchange. As it was my first time joining an international volunteer program, choosing Nepal turned out to be a perfect decision — the country is rich in culture and filled with kind, welcoming people. Volunteering at a Buddhist monastery provided a unique opportunity to engage with the local religious culture. The young monks, while sometimes a little mischievous, were incredibly smart, kind-hearted, and full of curiosity. Beyond the teaching work, staying at a local guesthouse brought even more diversity to the experience. Volunteers from all over the world, of different ages and cultural backgrounds, came together here. The guesthouse host was extremely supportive and helpful, making it easier for us to connect with local life and customs. Overall, this was an experience truly worth having. If my circumstances allowed, I would have loved to stay even longer!

I came to Nepal through the Third Eye FOundaiton as my first time elaving my home country where I stayed with my fantastic host, Bijaya Ghimire, and his super kind family, for close to three months (10 weeks in total). There, I went teaching in the mornings and exploring in the afternoon, often going on hikes and even having the chance to leave the city to explore the neighboring city Pokhara. I had a blast and would recommend the experience to anyone thinking of going abroad.

Highly raccomend this experience. The host family was the most welcoming and helpful you could find. The Hospital was nearby and I could shadow very kind doctors who thought me in a very different perspective from my own doing everything they could to eliminate the language barrier. Highly raccomended!

I worked in a rice and vegetable field, feeding goats and buffalo, cleaning the streets of the city, and teaching English to monks. It was a mix of manual labor and cultural exchange, offering me the chance to learn new skills and contribute to the community.

It was a wonderful experience. I met a wonderful family and found a brother like Bj. During this month in Nepal, I had the opportunity to visit several cities and participate in various activities, from trekking in the Himalayas to harvesting turmeric in Kudi and meditating with the monks in Kathmandu. Nepal will change your perspective on life.

I went to Nepal to see how veterinairy care is executed here. I visited several clinics, the zoo and the government animal hospital. The last will be best to see a lot of cases and learn more about veterinary medicine. I highly enjoyed the welcoming guesthouse and the excursions I made. The host is very knowledgeable and accommodating in everything you need. And the country for me felt safe and easy to adapt to. I really can recommend staying in this place.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the program because I found only one review in my field, and it didn’t help me much in preparing. However, it’s important to understand that every volunteer takes something unique from their experience. I’m writing this so that future participants can feel more confident. The project description mentioned that a local SIM card would be provided, but if you’re traveling without roaming, like I did, be aware that there is no free Wi-Fi at Kathmandu Airport. I used a currency exchange service at the airport exit (the exchange rate difference compared to city exchangers is minimal) and purchased a SIM card myself. Bijaya personally met me at the airport, arranged my transfer to the guesthouse, and provided a hot dinner. I was placed in a room shared with a volunteer from Germany, a very pleasant girl. Everyone speaks English well. The first day was free for adaptation. We visited two temples, and Bijaya introduced us to the local traditional cuisine. On the second day, we were introduced to Dr. Thapa and his wonderful team at the Mobile Veterinary Hospital. As part of the volunteer program, we also had the opportunity to exchange experiences with the veterinary service of the Central Zoo of Kathmandu, the only zoo in the country. Beyond participating in the program, I also initiated a professional collaboration by integrating my expertise into Nepal’s animal welfare system through HICAST, addressing the urgent need for humane population control and animal protection. I needed to expand my volunteer program to integrate my professional expertise into the local animal welfare community, and Bijaya helped me organize this through HICAST. Kathmandu itself is a relatively small city, but it’s full of life. The guesthouse where volunteers stay has everything needed for a reasonably comfortable stay for an undemanding traveler. The distance from the guesthouse to the volunteer sites is about 5–8 km. You can easily cover this distance in several ways: by taxi (around 500 NPR), moto-taxi (around 170 NPR), or bus (25 NPR). However, since I prefer physical activity and wanted to immerse myself in the local atmosphere, I chose to walk whenever possible. Thanks to that, I took countless photos. For personal expenses, I recommend bringing at least $100, depending on your spending habits. It’s worth noting that the volunteer program organizer can arrange additional trips to the mountains or other tourist activities, personally accompanying you. I didn’t take advantage of this option because my focus was on integrating my practical expertise into Nepal’s professional community. There is an undeniable and urgent need here for humane population control and animal welfare protection, which was the purpose of my volunteer work. Keep in mind that nights in Kathmandu can be quite cold, and houses don’t have heating, so bring warm clothes. But even if you don’t, you can find everything you need within walking distance of the project. The project site offers 24/7 Wi-Fi access and a water cooler on each floor. European-style power sockets are provided, so you don’t need to bring an adapter. You will also receive three meals a day in a warm, family-like atmosphere. The program was packed with activities—if I had stayed for a month instead of two weeks, I still would have had plenty to do. One thing to note: Nepal experiences frequent tremors, so if you’re afraid of earthquakes, consider the risks in advance. Also, houses traditionally have single-pane windows, and at night, your sleep will likely be accompanied by the persistent barking of numerous dogs. In the early morning, around 5 or 6 AM, monks begin chanting, which you won’t miss unless you bring earplugs. This wasn’t a problem for me, but for those who value privacy, it’s good to be aware of these things. And the cherry on top—if you love children, the volunteer programs of the Third Eye Foundation are perfect for you. Bijaya’s daughters are an absolute delight, and the children here in general are simply wonderful. It was one of the most heartwarming experiences of my trip. For me, this program was not just about volunteering but about making a lasting impact. I hope future participants find the same sense of purpose and connection in their work here.

The Hands-On Veterinary Programme gives you the best opportunity to get to know many different facets of Kathmandu/ Nepal – first and foremost the great warmth and hospitality of the amazing people. Bijaya and his family are wonderful hosts and happy to show you around or support you with everything. The team at the clinic is just as warm-hearted and fun to be with. You will experience many different cases, which are also exciting if you are not a vet. You will also have the option of going on home visits, so you can get to almost every corner and different homes of the city. After four weeks, I got to know the beautiful country and people much better in a very honest way as I experienced many special moments. I can therefore wholeheartedly recommend everyone to do the same, you won’t regret it.

That was a pleasure to meet Bijaya and living in his guest house during 4 weeks. He welcomes you with smile and is always ready to help you discovering Kathmandu and many others places. The medical staff at the clinic is also very friendly. It's very easy to exchange and discuss with them. The weak point stay the distance between the clinic and the guest house (more or less 45 minutes with tuktuks)

I had an excellent time with Third Eye Volunteering. Bijaya and his family were excellent hosts during my whole time in Nepal. They were very flexible and arranged for me to help out in veterinary clinics as well as teach at local schools and monasteries. I had an authentic experience living with them in Kathmandu and he helped arrange the rest of my travels in Nepal (Pokhara, Chitwan, trekking, meditation retreats). Overall I can’t recommend them enough and will be sure to visit them next time I am in Nepal.

I had a great time and always felt very secure and taken care of. Bijayas family is so nice and they are always ready to help with things at the house or trips around Kathmandu. The vet clinic was so nice to be at and everyone there was welcoming and excited to show what they do every day. I got to go on the motorcycle with them to go on house visits and it was such a nice way to see more of how people are living here both in the rich parts of the town but also the more poor side. Overall I would definitely recommend this program for anyone thinking about a solo travel.
