Numbers of street children are increasing in urban areas around Nepal and especially in Kathmandu. There are currently 1000 street children in Kathmandu. They primarily live in various areas around Kathmandu. Outside the city of Kathmandu, there are over 4000 street children who are living in other cities in Nepal such as Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dharan, Nepalgunj, Bhairawa and other cities as well. The children living on the streets are 90% male and 10% female. The reason for the increase of children living on the street is due to more urbanization, migration, lack of family support, poverty, increasing unemployment, and abandonment. There is no organization that is in place to help the betterment of the street children and get them off the streets.
The nation has not drafted any program and policy for trying to find these children a home a providing a better life. It is extremely necessary to support the deprived street children who are suppressed by their family, parents, and society. It is also likely that street children get involved in prostitution for survival just so they can provide enough food for them to eat. Due to the tough and unjust street life these children get involved in using tobacco, smoking cigarettes, hasis, alcohol abuse, smell dendrite, and even in some cases injection of drugs. Some are even found to be affected by HIV due to the lack of education and sanitation of their lifestyle.
The street children depend upon tourists for a way to survive. Once tourist season ends they are left digging through dirt and collecting plastic as a way to survive. Due to lack of food, resident and cleaning, street children are covered with bed bugs and louses all over their entire bodies. As they sleep with dogs and their whelp in the street, they suffer from various diseases. It is necessary to help rescue the street children by volunteering and helping toward the fight for the preservation of children rights. Therefore, we hope to help rescue and support them from further abandonment by providing a stable and safe enviornment where they can flourish and grow. As we are now in the 21st century here is to hope of a better future for all children not just in Nepal but around the world as well.
